24, 2010: A notice from the Broadway
Market! August
21, 2010: Juniper on Elmwood has closed. August 2, 2010: More Lawn Fetes for August and September have been added to the Food Events page. July 31, 2010: Be looking for some new street vendors in downtown Buffalo. Riley's (serves roast beef) at Main & Court and Lloyd (serving tacos) at Main & Mohawk. Best wishes to them! July 25, 2010: The Grapevine has added a BBQ to their menu; Ribs, pulled pork, Southwest burger, BBQ chicken wrap and BBQ chicken salad. July 21, 2010: The Broadway Market has discontinued their Sunday Farmer's Market. This is sad because it was the only Sunday Farmer's Market in the area and I thought the experiment was certainly worth trying. Maybe next year try a different day. July 20, 2010: Taste of Niagara will be held the weekend of July 23rd through the 25th along Old Falls Street in downtown Niagara Falls, NY. As in previous years, TASTE OF NIAGARA will showcase the very best culinary specialties, decadent desserts and great wine from purveyors throughout the Niagara region, as well as all of Western New York. July 15, 2010: Streets have been blocked off, buses re-routed, and Hertel Ave. has been transformed into Sorrento Cheese Italian Heritage Festival which will begin today. It will run through Sunday and the weather is looking great! Time to dust off grandma's pierogi recipe. It's almost time to enter the 3rd annual Buffalo's Best Pierogi Contest being hosted by Corpus Christi Church, 199 Clark St., one block east of the Broadway Market. This contest is open to amateurs and businesses (using a traditional recipe). Deadline for entries is Saturday Aug. 13th. July 10, 2010: I've just updated the Food Events page with the latest information regarding Lawn Fetes and Summer Festivals that also have chowder or chicken BBQ or pork dinners or all three. These events are in full swing over the next few weeks and for most of them it is a major source of income for the coming year and they are great fun! If your community or organization is having one of these events, please let me know and I will be glad to post it on Blendings. I find the ones offering homemade chowder the most interesting, because each one is unique and the recipes are a closely guarded secret. The Taste of Buffalo starts today and the weather look great! Hope you get a chance to get there. July 7, 2010: New restaurant review - Empire Grill in North Buffalo. Don't forget - Taste of Buffalo this weekend! July 4, 2010: Happy Independence Day!!
Homegrown raspberries are now in season! It's been a long wait, but they are finally here. They are ripening so fast now that we have to pick them twice a day. Our neighbor used to have them many years ago and they allowed our kids to pick them whenever they wanted. We got hooked. When the kids were grown and moved out we removed our 18 foot above-ground pool and planted a garden. One of the first things we planted was raspberries. They were nothing more than sticks with no sign of life at all. Slowly they got leaves and started to grow. Now we have to cut them back or they would take over the whole yard. They do take some upkeep in the fall, but not much. The canes that bore fruit this summer have to be cut down and just the new canes that sprouted up are left for next summer. If you like raspberries and have a little bit of room in your yard, grow them yourself for a wonderful summer treat. Great for that 4th of July dessert! June
24, 2010, The "Dry-Aging Experiment" After seeing how much
Alton Brown (Food TV) was enjoying his home made dry-aged Porterhouse, I just
had to try it myself for Father's Day. We got some beautiful 1 1/4 in. thick
Delmonico Rib-eyes with the bone in. We dried them on a rack in the
refrigerator wrapped in a paper towel that we changed each day for four days.
They turned a nice darker color which was expected. Excess moisture coming
out, flavor concentrating, enzymes tenderizing etc. etc. I was drooling
already. The day came for the grilling. Now, I didn't use the same setup as
Alton, but I did have my grill maxed out. They sizzled a lot the instant they
hit the grill. Yes, we did season them and let them sit at room temp. for a
1/2 hr. before. I let them on until they were done and still nice and pink
inside (145 degrees). June 23, 2010, The Blendings page that lists all the Bakeries in Buffalo has been updated. I've made direct links to any Bakery that had their own web site. The others, had their name listed in web sites that have comments or reviews about them but it was not a site that they created. I'll revisit those again in the future to see if they have created their own web site. If you know of any other Bakeries in the Western NY area, please let me know. It's always fun to stop and bring back some dessert when you're on a road trip somewhere. June 16, 2010, New review about the food at Allentown Art Festival. Some surprises! June
12, 2010, Just a few updates:
Encore, 492 Pearl St. Patio Dining Available. 716-931-5001. Rain or Shine June
11, 2010, Mothers, 33 Virginia Place - patio is now open - call for
res. 862-2989. June 7, 2010 Coming up this weekend Sat. & Sun. is the Allentown Art Festival. Not particularly known for it's gourmet food, but certainly known for it's great art and interesting people. Food vendors are of the carnival type; fried dough, Italian sausage, waffles etc. Come to think of it, there are times I crave those foods and really enjoy them especially after the long winter! June 2, 2010 Coming up this weekend June 4, 5 & 6th, is the 33rd Annual Greek Festival at the Hellenic Orthodox Church, 146 West Utica. Great Greek Food!! May 31, 2010 Happy Memorial Day! Remember, the price of Freedom isn't free! Have a great day! May
28, 2010 The Broadway Market
is having a Farmer's Market starting next Sunday. Buffalo's only Sunday farmer's market starts June 6th, 9 AM - 2 PM, under the
Market's covered back parking lot between Gibson and Lombard Streets. Live entertainment, fresh produce, food, crafts and more!! Support
your local agriculture and have some fun doing it! May 27, 2010 With the Gulf oil spill, the price of shrimp will be sure to rise and I believe it will be across the board including farm raised. This week Price-Rite has their 2 lb. bag of frozen shrimp on sale for less than $9. It's part of their Grand Opening sale. Roswell Park Cancer Ins. has their own Farmers Market (open to the public of course) outside in their beautifully landscaped Kaminski Park on Carlton just a block from the Fruit Belt and right in the heart of the medical complex. It starts Wed. June 2 and will continue each Wed. until the end of Oct. It starts at 12 pm. They have fresh produce, breads, flowers etc. etc. May 23, 2010 It may be too early for most of our local produce, but our home grown perennial herbs are in full bloom. French tarragon, chives, oregano and sage have been ready to be harvested since last week. Each spring they look like they are dead and will never come back, but they do. The tarragon and sage are in pots and we just move them into the garage for the winter, just to get them out of the way. They look like dried sticks when they are brought back out. I trimmed the woody parts off and now they are doing beautifully. May 19, 2010 New restaurant review. Condrell's Candies, 2805 Delaware Ave., Kenmore, 877-4485. May 18, 2010 Blendings Farmers' Market - U-Pick list has been updated and there is a link to where you can go to pick-your-own! Fresh local strawberries will be coming in next month. You can start planning your trip now! May 16, 2010 New restaurant review. Ling Ling, Chinese Take-out on Elmwood in Kenmore. May 14, 2010

other day. They have it archived now, but here is a link to it. http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_action=doc&p_docid=12FAD217AFC727C8&p_docnum=1 May 10, 2010

May 4, 2010 Don't be misled by the name Parkside Candy at the corner of Main and Winspear. It's a great place for lunch too. They serve great deli sandwiches, soup and homemade chili. Of course there is the candy and ice cream. They are at 3208 Main St. 833-7540 April 27, 2010 Janice Okun (Buffalo News Food Reviewer) gave 3 1/2* to Tantalus in East Aurora, 634 Main St. 652-0341. Brunch, Patio Dining and Banquet facilities. The Westwood Country Club, 772 N. Forest Rd. in Amherst, 632-3040 is under new management and has opened its restaurant Windows on the Green to non-club members. Some restaurants are doing 50 to 100%. This is a very popular event and reservations are recommended. April 23, 2010 I just happened to notice that some restaurant menu prices have dropped the decimals, and just show the full dollar amt. a like -9 or -25. (I know, you're probably thinking where the heck have you been!) I've added to new restaurant to the Buffalo Downtown area. It's called Della Terra, 200 Delaware Ave. Embassy Suites 716-842-6100. I didn't list it in Fine Dining. I just thought it was too soon to qualify. April 21, 2010

There is a new bar on Military near Sheridan where the St. James used to be called Moonies - Sports Bar. I'll investigate further. April 6, 2010 A new restaurant opened on March 25th in the city of Tonawanda. Richard's on Main, 561 Main St. City of Tonawanda 716-807-0888. It had been for a long time, Warren's and then for awhile Frog Grill. From the tone of the article in the Tonawanda News, it sounds like the new owner would like to welcome back former Warren's customers. The are also doing banquets and catering! Best wishes to him! April 4, 2010 Janice Okun (Buffalo News Restaurant Reviewer) gave 4 stars (surprise, surprise) to Oliver's at 2895 Delaware Ave. 877-9662. I think she has always given Oliver's her highest rating!
